How do I import address book entries from CSU Webmail to Google Mail?

The procedure to get your Webmail contacts into Google mail consists of two stages. First you will log on to Webmail an export your contacts to a file you save on the local system. Next you logon to the Google mail site and import the file you saved in the first step. Note that you cannot export mail groups, only individual contacts. You need to re-create groups manually in Google mail after importing your contacts.

  1. Using a Web browser, logon to your CSU Webmail account at https://webmail.colostate.edu. Enter your username, select the desired mail server and type your password then click "Log In."
  2. Click the "Export Address Book" button at the bottom of the main screen.
    - You may get a message warning you that you are about to send information over an unencrypted connection. If so, click "Ok" or "Continue" to proceed.
  3. Make sure the "Comma Separated Values" option is selected (it is by default) and click the "Export" button.
  4. Save the contacts on the next screen by clicking "File" then "Save As" ("Save Page As" in Firefox). Change the file type to text file. Make note of the location that the browser wants to save the file by default. Change it to a better location if needed.
    - In Internet Explorer 7, you may not see a "File" menu. Press Alt-F to get to the "File" menu.
    - In Internet Explorer you may get a message that says the webpage may not save correctly. If so, click "Yes" to continue.
    - In Internet Explorer you MUST leave the file extension as ".txt" or it will add HTML content to the file which will cause errors.
    - In Firefox, make sure you set the file type. If you don't, it will include HTML content to the file which will cause errors.
  5. Using your Web browser, log on to Google mail at http://mail.rams.colostate.edu using your eID logon and password.
  6. Click the "Contacts" link on the left side of the screen.
  7. Click the "Import" link in the upper right side of the next screen.
  8. Specify the file you created in previous steps by typing the full path in the box below "Please select a file to upload" or clicking the "Browse" button and navigating to the file.
  9. Click the "Import" button to begin.
  10. Google mail will attempt to import the contacts and report the results, including any errors, at the end of the process.

If you have problems viewing all of the contacts after the import, try typing something in the "Search contacts" box then deleting it. If that does not work, log out of Google mail.
